How to Find Your Perfect Jeans Size

Denim labels mix measurements, cuts and fabric behaviour. Here is how to read them.

Read the label properly

Men's denim is usually labelled W x L: waist and inseam in inches. Women's denim often uses an abstract numeric size instead. Converting between them requires a waist measurement, not a label translation.

Rigid versus stretch

One hundred percent cotton denim relaxes with wear, so a snug fit at purchase becomes comfortable. Denim with elastane holds its shape but can loosen through the day. Choose the exact measurement for rigid denim and avoid sizing down in high-stretch fabrics.

Rise changes everything

A high-rise sits at the natural waist, a mid-rise a few centimetres below, and a low-rise on the hips. The same person can wear two different labelled sizes across those rises because each is drafted from a different body measurement.

Inseam and hemming

Measure from crotch seam to the desired hem length while wearing the shoes you will pair with the jeans. Inseam is easy to shorten but impossible to lengthen, so favour the longer option when between lengths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my jeans stretch out?

Cotton fibres relax with body heat and movement. Rigid denim commonly gains one to three centimetres at the waist during a wear.

Should I size down in stretch denim?

Usually no. High-stretch denim can end up loose and lose shape.
